“…The love is melding things so they are all one. People and trees and grass and all of you. You are being it by just looking with those kinds of eyes. That is the way – wow. Yeah. It’s – ahhhh – too much to talk about because it isn’t speakable. It is just being.” Ram Dass
I first was in the presence of Ram Dass, a spiritual leader that many of you may know, when he was being broadcast over Skype into a conference room at Omega Institute in 2017. I had heard his name but never read any of his teachings or seen him. Now, in his elder years and after suffering a stroke, this wise, brilliant, funny and deeply loving human “being” sat mostly in silence which I watched on this large screen. And all was well. All was very well.
He radiated such love, such joy, smiling with his eyes. I felt engulfed in his palpable energy that was so thick I could lean into it. Here he was, the author of Be Here Now, just BEING. I loved feeling the spaciousness of that. I began to feel that spaciousness in myself and he wasn’t “doing” anything other than being love.
I’ve known how important it is to be a human “being” instead of a human “doing” and I’ve tried… but trying to “be” kind of defeats the purpose!! Truly Being in Ram Dass’ presence gave me the experience viscerally what that meant and I would like to share that with you.
Luckily there are many, many audios and videos of Ram Dass available including wonderful teachings on Sounds True. Today I watched a movie that you might find enlightening. I know I did. I felt the opening of my heart and tears rolled down my face during the meditation that is towards the end, especially when Krishna Das’s music began. It doesn’t take a lot of time to experience this kind of heart opening. It takes willingness to make space and give it a try.
The title of this film is “Cultivating Loving Awareness” with Ram Dass, Sharon Salzberg, Krishna Das, and Mirabai Bush.
Enjoy and please let me know what parts touch you!
